THE WEEKLY NOVA

The day after the Charmer’s Market, I woke up to find some graffiti sprayed on one of the back doors of the NOME. There were some choice words about Winston sprawled out in all caps, bold red, as if the person who had done the vandalizing was screaming inside and determined to get their message out there for Winston to see.

I took a bucket with soap, water, and cleaner and fervently tried to scrub away the remnants of the words until my arm muscles were sore and ached in protest.

I leaned back on my heels, still crouched over the last part that needed to be stripped away, inspecting my progress. I’d managed to get most of it off, but there was still some residue that would have to be rinsed, and I’d still probably have to go over the area with a scrubber one more time.

“At least it was on the back of the building and not the front,” I muttered to myself with a sigh and brushed a layer of sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand.

The afternoon was winding down, and I’d already closed the museum for the afternoon. Winston was safe and hanging out at Nicolai’s place for the time being. I took a shower and locked up.

Then I headed out to the Weekly Nova. I had one purpose for this visit—to confirm Madame Calypso’s alibi.

The Weekly Nova was enchanted so that the humans living around the area couldn’t find it. The charms worked much like my market did. To those who weren’t supernatural, the Weekly Nova simply looked like a plot of empty land next to a field by the beach.

You had to navigate your way up a particularly arduous hill with lots of sharp curves without guardrails and a narrow, unforgiving dirt road.

I knew that the reason the witches and wizards who ran it put it there in the first place was because it wasn’t densely populated, and it wasn’t in an area that was easy to access for humans.

When I arrived, I parked and walked up to the front doors. I had called in advance to schedule an appointment with the editor in chief because I didn’t want to get there and have to be given the runaround and sent away.

I didn’t have time to wait around, especially for Nicolai’s and Winston’s sake, because they seemed to be suffering the most from the curse. The guilt tugged at me. I felt so responsible for it all.

I walked through the double doors leading into the building. The sound of phones softly rang, and the low hum of chatter filtered through the air.

Instead of fluorescent lights on the ceiling, there were chandeliers glowing brightly by the use of magic.

There were rows of cubicles winding around in a mazelike design. The reception area was in the center in the back of the main area, positioned up against a huge center wall.

The receptionist behind the desk had long acrylic nails that were the color of an indigo sky just after dusk.
